Group Therapy

What is group therapy?

If you are living with stress, searching for healthy coping mechanisms, or in need of a supportive system or environment, group therapy could be a good fit for you.

Very Well Mind defines group therapy as “a form of psychotherapy that involves one or more therapists working with several people at the same time. Group therapy is sometimes used alone, but it is also commonly integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that also includes individual therapy and medication.”

Group therapy is a healthy way to address and heal the root of trauma, stress, confusion, and other sources of discomfort and instability in a person’s life.

Partners in Physical Therapy in Lake Charles offers group therapy and would be happy to speak with you about getting started. Contact our clinic for more information and to set up an appointment!

Why choose group therapy?

Although it may be different from the kind of therapy many people are used to, group therapy still offers a variety of mental health benefits.

Participating in group therapy with other individuals who may have experienced the same problems can help a person to feel less alone in their struggle to recover or resolve their issues. Speaking with others who have gone through the same or similar situations can lessen feelings of guilt, shame, or stress.

This can also improve a person’s outlook on their situation and instill hope as well, because all of the people in a group therapy session have reached different phases of their therapy and may be able to offer different insight.

Group therapy sessions also offer patients a safe way to practice new interactions and social behaviours as well.  Our therapists strongly encourage all participants in each session to help create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment so that others can speak and interact without the fear of failure. This also helps the person sharing to gain a better look at who they are or who they would like to become through therapy.

Group therapy sessions ultimately are a great way for people in different areas of healing to share their feelings and experiences, while also helping others to relieve themselves of feelings of sadness, anxiety, depression, and pain.

Partners in Physical Therapy strongly encourages anyone who is seeking therapeutic intervention to ask our clinic about our individual and group therapy sessions. We understand the road to healing is not an easy one to go down alone, and we want you to know that here, you don’t have to.

What should I expect with group therapy?

Sessions will typically begin with all members of the group stating their name and why they are participating in group therapy. Sometimes they may choose to talk about their week or progress since the last time the group met.

Therapeutic group sessions may be organized in different ways based on what kinds of situations each member is working through. The group may also meet more than once per week.

If you’re unsure about whether or not you would be comfortable with group therapy, know that your worries are normal and actually, pretty common! Talk to your therapist during your one on one session about the dynamics of group therapy to decide whether or not it would be the best choice for you moving forward.
